The Uyghur (Uygur, Uighur, Uigur) are a Turkic people of Central Asia. The minority has a long history that can be traced back to the year 3 B.C. Today Uyghurs live mainly in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, especially to the south of Mt. Tianshan. Uyghur has communities in the United States, Canada, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Germany, United Kingdom and Turkey.
Islam has strongly influenced their way of life. The grand festivals celebrated include the Lesser Bairam (Kaizhai Festival, Eid-ul-Fitr) and Korban (Corban, Zaisheng) Festival, which are occasions for feasts of mutton and mutual greetings. Uygur people are good at processing gold, gem, silk and leather goods. Hetian County in Xinjiang is rich in fine jade which is regarded as a rare first-class gem.
