The Torch Festival falls on June 24th of the lunar calendar and lasts for three days. It is the traditional holiday of Yi ethnic group in southwest China's Yunnan and Sichuan Province.
During the festival, Yi people in all villages would carry torches and walk around their houses and fields, and plant pine torches in the hope of driving away insect pests. After making their rounds, the Yis of the whole village would gather around bonfires, playing moon guitars (a four-stringed instrument with a moon-shaped sound box) and mouth organs, dancing and drinking wine through the night to pray for a good harvest.
Yi people also participate in activities such as bull fighting, horse racing, wrestling, visiting relatives etc. People burn torches for three days and nights. It is believed that he torch symbolizes happiness and brings good luck to the people.
